Encouraging Scripture for Singleness

Our God is a God of hope, joy, and peace, not discouragement and hopelessness. Pray that God fills you with these in this time of singleness. And may God’s Holy Spirit empower you to have hope for the future and hope for a spouse.

Romans 15:13 – “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.”

Continue to put your trust in God. It’s not easy to do this when you’ve been waiting so long, but this may be a time where God is testing your faith. Don’t be like a house that falls when any storm comes, stand strong in the Lord.

Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
    and do not lean on your own understanding.
 In all your ways acknowledge him,
    and he will make straight your paths.”

Matthew 7:25 – “The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.”

Do not fear or worry. This is command given by God over and over again, so doing otherwise is disobedience and a sin. This is a tough one, because worrying and fearing the future seems so innocent and common. You may fear you’ll never get married and be lonely forever. Come to God, be honest with Him. He promises to be with you (even if you do end up single forever, which I doubt you will if you have this desire), He will strengthen, help, and uphold you just as He has all these years of being single.

Isaiah 41:10- ” fear not, for I am with you;
    be not dismayed, for I am your God;
I will strengthen you, I will help you,
    I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

God promises to lead and guide you in the right direction. Ask Him to lead you to be in the right place at the right time to meet your future spouse.

Psalm 32:8 – “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
    I will counsel you with my eye upon you.”

God is a good God who has a good plan for your life. It’s easy to think otherwise in the season of singleness. But don’t forget that God has never stopped being good, He hasn’t changed from the Old Testament times to today. He remains good even when we mess up or doubt Him. If you and I (sinful mere human beings), can be “good” and want to do good and can love those around us, imagine how much more GOD is good and loving and WANTS to do something good in your life!!

Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

Matthew 7:11 “If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!”

Every time you start being discouraged in this season, talk to God about it. Remember who you are talking and pleading to, this is GOD, the one who knows and sees and loves you more than you will ever understand. I love this story of a child who’s ball rolled on the street. The father held the child back because he saw a car in the distance that would hurt the child. The child was crying and was frustrated because all he wanted was the ball, but the father saw ahead and knew when was the right time to retreive the ball. So it is with you, God sees the bigger picture and knows when is the right time to bring you your spouse, He may just be protecting you. Remember, He is good always! He may not answer your prayer the way you expect, but He does promise to give you peace.

Philippians 4:6-7 “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
